We use a mixture of juices & smoothies at home to make sure we get the full benefits from both methods:
Juicing:
- Juicing removes the fibre and digests quicker allowing nutrients to be more readily absorbed by the body
- Be careful with juicing lots of fruits, as it can be pure fructose straight into the system (not always the best idea)
- If you are juicing lots, ensure you have more green veggies, and 1-2 fruits max (use apples, pears, lemons & limes)
- Pros to juicing – gives your body a quick hit of nutrients, it’s an amazing way to get your veggies in for the day
- Cons to juicing – can be expensive as you tend to use more ingredients, plus most machines take a little more effort to clean, removes the fibre (fibre is great to push things through your system)
Blending/Smoothies:
- Blending keeps the fibre content which is great for digestion
- Keeps you feeling fuller for longer
- Pros to blending – uses less ingredients, allows you to use more fruits, it is quick to make, and easier to clean, less expensive, allows you to add things like, nuts & seeds, nut butters, milk alternatives (almond, coconut, soy etc), a great way to get your veggies in
- Cons to blending – it is easier to overload on the calorie content, as well as the sugar content, is often used a meal replacement (we need to eat real foods, juicing & blending can be added as part of your diet, using them as your ONLY source of food consumption can be risky)
Ingredients:
- 3 whole apples
- 3 oranges with peel removed (use a chef’s knife to remove the skin)
- 3-4 medium sized carrots, peeled
- Big knob of ginger (you can leave the skin on for this)
Method:
- Add the carrots & ginger, then place 1 apple on top
- Set the juicer to it’s highest speed (we only have two options on ours)
- Start to juice, and then feed the rest of the ingredients through whilst the machine is on
- Use a large jug, or go straight into a glass (if it’s big enough)
- Let the machine run on for a bit so that you get all of the juice
- Give it a good stir, and then serve over ice (optional)
- This makes enough for the two of us, and we love it (mine is the bigger glass)
Like most things, we go through phases when it comes to juicing. I would say we juice around 1-2 times per week, and mainly at the weekend.
If you don’t already own a juicer, I would highly recommend that one finds a loving home in your kitchen. The one we have is around 3-5 years old at least. It is pretty simple, but does the job, beautifully.
I can’t wait to try this juice!
