Overweight And Starving

OVERWEIGHT & STARVING

Would you associate these two words together? Normally, no. But with the vast majority of seriously overweight people around the world (plus some that aren’t so overweight), this is quite simply what’s going on inside of their body.

The word ‘Starving‘, in this case, isn’t to be used in the literal sense. It’s meaning is in the form of feeding the body. Providing it with fuel, giving it life to function optimally, and most importantly, to thrive in a healthy environment.

(‘So how can someone be starving, if they do nothing but constantly eat?)

To simplify, let’s put foods into two categories:

NUTRIENT DENSE FOODS & FOODS VOID OF NUTRIENTS

Nutrient Dense Foods:

  • Vegetables
  • Fruits
  • Lean meats & fish
  • Nuts & seeds
  • Pulses & legumes

 

Foods Void of Nutrients:

  • Sweets
  • Cakes
  • Cereals
  • Fizzy drinks
  • Processed foods
  • Breads (not all)
  • Pizza
  • Fast foods
  • Packaged foods

The body thrives on nutrients, every living cell continuously needs them in order for you to function, more importantly, those cells need to be fed.

The list of ‘foods void of nutrients‘ are usually the ones that are considerably higher in calories, not to mention the volume in which they are consumed. With all of that food going into the system, and not being utilised, the body simply doesn’t know what else to do with it, other than store it somewhere for later use…..yes, you’ve guessed it, body fat.

So what we get left with, is a body that is crying out to be fed because it’s starved of nutrients. We then go and feed it again with more of the same, as the brain thinks we are hungry, only to be left in this constant state of hunger. It’s a very vicious circle.

We have all heard the saying ‘YOU ARE WHAT YOU EAT‘?

Well, to some degree, this is true, but from a recent article I read, a better saying would be somewhere along the lines like this YOU ARE WHAT YOU EAT, ABSORB, DIGEST‘.

The latter is a much more accurate way of looking at your food, and how it effects your everyday performance. Remember, performance isn’t just about being able to out-run your siblings (well, maybe a little bit), performance is in your every day activities, from work, mood, energy levels, sleep, everything.

If you are feeding yourself on ‘foods void of nutrients‘ your body is going to absorb and digest very little, and your current state of performance will simply be a reflection of what you are eating.

Food is such an amazing every day experience that is there to be enjoyed. No matter what you choose to eat, it all goes down the same hole. How you feel, look, and present yourself to the world is a reflection of what is happening on the inside.
